Introducing our SCMM 2013 supporters - 04 - Maneka Chotirmall

Introducing our SCMM 2013 supporters - 04 - Maneka Chotirmall
Maneka isn't a Dream Category runner - she chose to run for LIFE Trust by picking up one of our Half-Marathon charity bibs. When we asked her to pledge raise for us, she was gracious enough to set up an online donation page and to reach out to her contacts and has subsequently seen great success in bringing in additional funds for our cause! We'd like to highlight here the importance of individuals like Maneka, much like Mr. Mahadevan, recently profiled by Under the Mango Tree, who rise towards the occasion and extend their support towards efforts that they believe in. Opportunities such as the SCMM/UWM charity system today offer unprecedented simplicity for people to contribute towards social causes on a large scale and it would be great if information about Maneka's contribution could help spread awareness about the platform(s). Maneka currently works as a Social Media Executive with Skarma, a design outfit in Mumbai. Prior to this, she has worked as a Digital Marketing Consultant with publishers Conde Nast in Mumbai and as an English teacher at Berlitz in Kobe, Japan!     We wish Maneka all the best with her training for the Half-Marathon. If you would like to support her pledge raising efforts, her online pledge page will continue to receive donations (entirely free from transaction fees) until January 31st at this link: http://www.unitedwaymumbai.org/donation.php?ngo_id=104&sup_id=2072 Thank you to Maneka and all our supporters!

Meet Mahadevan: Passionate about Bees, Running and a Wonderful Supporter!

Meet Mahadevan: Passionate about Bees, Running and a Wonderful Supporter!
Two years ago, we received a phone call from a gentleman who said he was very distressed to see beehives being burnt in a school he was associated with...he had done a google search and found us..so he wanted to come and learn more about our work...so we kind of said yes and forgot about it.  Being a start up with a small team, our work took us into the interiors of Gujarat and Maharashtra and we were rarely in our Mumbai office....but Mahadevan was very persistent and one fine day he landed up in our office....we had a long chat, he was a software engineer by profession and had read up voraciously about bees.  Thanks to his interest and enthusiasm, we started an urban beekeeping course in Mumbai in 2011 to increase awareness about bees and their role in our environments.  He is a great supporter of ours, always there when we need him. He used his technical skills to help us create an MIS for better monitoring of beeboxes with the farmers. When we didnt have enough money to make the initial payment for Charity Bibs in SCMM 2013, we reached out and he loaned us Rs 10,000!  Thank you Mahadevan for always being there for us and wish you all the best as you prepare for SCMM 2013!

Stories from our supporters - 02 - The Nomura Group

Stories from our supporters - 02 - The Nomura Group
Our supporters Nomura have partnered with several NGOs in India to pursue CSR initiatives in health, education, civic engagement and other activities that benefit local communities. Their donations have supported organizations such as Help Age India, Mumbai Mobile Crèches, DEEDS (Development, Education, Empowerment of the Disadvantaged in Society), LIFE Trust and the National Association for the Blind. Overall, Nomura India has set up a wide range of opportunities for employees to volunteer in the community, including a partnership with UDAAN, in which employees help underprivileged students in their studies and preparation for exams. When Nomura partitipated in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, Asia’s largest charity race, in 2011, their employees organized three fundraisers for the Marathon - Art for charity, Books for charity and Jeans for charity. The funds were donated to LIFE Trust, Sight Savers India and Save the Children. Employees also raised funds for the UDAAN India Foundation by buying decorative items made by the children who are part of the Dropout Remedial Program (DOR) for girls.       Nomura this year also made a very generous donation of workstation computers to LIFE Trust and also contributed an HP Laser printer that we're using daily at the office! LIFE Trust would like to acknowledge the support we have received from Nomura, and would welcome their participation if they choose to return to the Marathon next year! Thank you for all your support!

Stories from our supporters - 01 - Sabero Organics
Sabero participated in India’s biggest sporting event and one of the largest platforms for raising funds for charity – The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon on January 16, 2011 with great zeal and enthusiasm in the Dream Run category. In all, 40 employees took part in this mega event under the sporting leadership of Mr. Mohit Chuganee, Vice Chairman & M.D., Sabero Group Of Companies. Mr. Nathan Rijsinghani, son of Mr. Jayant Rizsinghani, Director, Sabero Organics Americas Ltd., Brazil, specially flew down from Brazil to take part in the run and thoroughly enjoyed it, taking back fond memories. Sabero ran for its charity partner – LIFE Trust, an NGO – that works with the government to introduce various programmes at the school and pre-school levels to improve the quality and accountability of the education system for underprivileged children. Its vision is to make ‘School Chalo’ the mantra of every child in India. For the participants from Sabero, it was a thrilling sporting extravaganza and an enriching experience.       We're grateful to Sabero for their support - although they couldn't make it to the Marathon this year, we greatly look forward to their support in next year's edition!

Introducing our SCMM 2013 supporters - 02 - Rohan Batra (Dream Maker)

Introducing our SCMM 2013 supporters - 02 - Rohan Batra (Dream Maker)
After introducing Mr. Kabir Lumba in our last post, we're delighted to share that Rohan Batra, our Dream Maker in the SCMM 2011 has returned as a Dream Maker for LIFE Trust in the SCMM 2013! In the words of the man himself: "Different runners have different reasons for racing, I find that supporting a cause that is close to my heart is the best kind of motivation." My name is Rohan Batra and I have been a runner for three years. In those three years I have learnt one important lesson; the purpose of running, in the words of Bill Bowerman, "isn't to win the race; it's to test the limits of the human heart". I chose to run for LIFE Trust because it is an effective organisation that delivers tangible and transparent results in its activities. It is with this confidence that I when I race for LIFE Trust, I know I am having a direct effect upon someone's life. To have an NGO like LIFE Trust, to whom I have made a promise, provides me the motivation I need to train hard with discipline and to test my own limits as a runner.   We feel proud and privileged to have a supporter like Rohan running for us! To support his efforts, you may make an online donation (entirely free from transaction fees) directly via the following link: http://www.unitedwaymumbai.org/donation.php?ngo_id=104&sup_id=1590 Thank you to everyone who's made Rohan's effort a success - his page will continue to accept donations until January 31st, so do spread the word!
